Bharat Taxi Launches to Challenge Ola and Uber

Bharat Taxi, the government’s latest initiative under the Union Ministry of Cooperation and National e-Governance Division, promises to redefine India’s ride-hailing experience. Developed as a fully cooperative platform, it aims to empower drivers and ensure fair, surge-free pricing for passengers.

A New Cooperative Mobility Model

Unlike private firms like Ola and Uber that charge drivers high commissions, Bharat Taxi operates on a cooperative model through Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited. Here, drivers—called Saarthis—become co-owners and shareholders, ensuring they keep 100% of their earnings. Instead of commissions, a small membership fee sustains the platform. This structure builds driver dignity, inclusion, and stronger income security.

Transparent Fares and Passenger Benefits

Commuters will finally say goodbye to unpredictable surge pricing. Bharat Taxi focuses on transparent fares, fair rates, and reliable service quality. Integrated with government platforms like DigiLocker and UMANG, it ensures a seamless digital experience for both Saarthis and passengers.

Leadership and Governance

Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul, has been appointed Chairperson, while Rohit Gupta of the National Cooperative Development Corporation serves as Vice-Chairperson. Their leadership embodies the “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” vision—prosperity through cooperation. The Board also includes democratically elected driver representatives, offering drivers a real voice in policy decisions.

Launch Timeline and Expansion

The pilot phase of Bharat Taxi will roll out in November 2025 across Delhi with 650 driver-owners, before expanding to major Indian cities like Mumbai, Pune, Lucknow, and Jaipur by December. Over 5,000 drivers will participate initially, scaling up to 1 lakh by 2030 as the cooperative-driven platform reaches district and rural markets.

Transforming India’s Mobility Landscape

Bharat Taxi represents more than just another cab option—it redefines urban transport through inclusivity, transparency, and citizen ownership. As app-based platforms face mounting criticism over high commissions and pricing manipulation, Bharat Taxi’s arrival could mark a paradigm shift, making city commutes affordable, ethical, and cooperative.
